Cashmere, Camel Hair or Vicuña: Is the World's Most Expensive Cloth Worth Commissioning?
October 01 2026 – Mirpuri Bespoke
There is a moment in every cutting room when a client lays his hand on a bolt of vicuña and goes quiet. It is the softest cloth most men will ever touch. It is also the most misunderstood. Before you commission a winter coat or jacket in a noble fibre, you should know what you are paying for, and what you are not.
The shift in season
Autumn/Winter 2026 has moved decisively towards texture and quiet luxury. The runways favoured soft, brushed surfaces over high-shine worsteds, and long overcoats in tonal, undyed colours. For the bespoke client, that points to the noble fibres. There is also a practical point: with an 8-week lead time, a commission placed this week is ready by the end of November, before the real cold arrives.
Vicuña: rarity, not ruggedness
Vicuña comes from a wild Andean camelid. It is shorn only every few years, and its trade is regulated internationally. Its fibre is finer than cashmere, typically around 12 to 13 microns, which gives it an extraordinary lightness. But finer fibre means a more delicate cloth. It is a coat for the car and the concert hall, not for a crowded commute or a wet platform. It is the fabric for the man who has everything.
Consider it if: you already own a working coat and want a lifetime heirloom.
Cashmere: the versatile benchmark
Cashmere is combed from the fine undercoat of the cashmere goat. Its fibres typically measure around 14 to 19 microns, giving it a soft, warm handle with genuine drape. It suits almost everything: a navy overcoat, a sports jacket, a charcoal blazer. It is the cloth we recommend most often, because it rewards daily wear without demanding ceremony.
Consider it if: you want one coat that moves from boardroom to weekend.
Camel hair: the cloth with character
Camel hair is gathered from the undercoat of the Bactrian camel as it moults. Its natural honeyed tone gave rise to the polo coat, and it remains the most characterful of the three. It is slightly less fine than good cashmere but has a dry, lofty warmth and a sporting pedigree that suits FW26's softer, broader silhouettes.
Consider it if: you want a statement overcoat with tonal, monochrome styling underneath.
Our editorial verdict
For most of our clients, a high-quality cashmere or cashmere blend delivers most of the pleasure at a fraction of the price and with far greater durability. Vicuña is a remarkable cloth, but it is a second or third coat, never the first.
Your commissioning checklist
-
Decide the coat's job: daily workhorse or occasion piece.
-
Handle all three cloths in person. Photographs flatter every fabric.
-
Choose colour before cut: navy, charcoal and camel are the season's most enduring.
-
Book by mid-October to wear it this winter.
The only reliable way to choose a noble cloth is to feel it against your own skin, in good light, with a cutter beside you. Book a cloth consultation and we will bring the bunches to the table.
